  • Ocean views: Skybay & Seabay high floors, St. John’s all rooms, Lakai tower building
  • Direct comparison with 3-year-old — 2-night trip in April 2025

On Friday afternoon, April 19th, we took a 2-night trip to Gangneung Gyeongpo with our 3-year-old. We visited last summer, but it was peak season — hard to book and pricey — so this time we targeted the spring off-season. There are 4-5 hotels clustered right along Gyeongpo Beach, and choosing accommodation is always a challenge.

This time, I personally visited all four — Skybay, Seabay, St. John’s, and Lakai Sandpine — and checked kids pool hours, breakfast menus, and ocean view angles. When traveling with kids, the pool and breakfast really matter. Here’s my honest breakdown of each hotel’s pros and cons.

1. Skybay Hotel Gyeongpo — Generous Kids Pool Hours, Kid-Friendly Breakfast Buffet

Open 9am to 8pm, our 3-year-old enjoying the slides

Skybay is located right on the main road facing Gyeongpo Beach. Parking goes down to basement level 3, and once you register your license plate at check-in, you can come and go freely. We booked an Ocean View Deluxe Double (floors 17-18), and from the window we could see both Gyeongpo Lake and the ocean.

The kids pool is on the 4th floor. It’s open from 9am to 8pm (Wednesdays only 2-8pm). It’s a heated pool, so even in April it was warm, and with two slides, our child played for an hour and a half straight. The downside is the changing room is a bit cramped. The adult pool is on the same floor, divided into indoor and outdoor sections, but the outdoor was still too chilly so we skipped it.

Breakfast buffet is served on the 2nd floor restaurant from 7:30am to 9:30am. It was $14 per person, and there were more kids menu items than expected. Sausages, steamed eggs, cereal, fruit, and toast are standard, plus seaweed soup and plain rice porridge made it easy for our child to eat. For adults, the sashimi, salmon, and salad bar selection was decent too.

For ocean views, I recommend 15th floor or higher. Our 17th floor room showed the ocean beyond Gyeongpo Lake, but the angle was narrower than expected. When I asked the front desk, they said floors 18-20 have the most unobstructed views. Off-season pricing was around $115 per night.

2. Seabay Hotel — Breakfast Included Package, Shallow Kids Pool for Safety

From 12th floor room, 2-minute walk to the beach

Seabay is right next to Skybay. Parking is available in the rear ground-level lot and basement level 2 — on a weekday there was plenty of space. We only checked in and looked around without actually staying overnight, but the front desk was very helpful.

Breakfast is included in the room rate for many packages. Off-season pricing was around $140 per night for two with breakfast included. Breakfast is served at the 2nd floor buffet restaurant from 7-10am. The menu is similar to Skybay, but the kids corner has pancakes and waffles which children apparently love.

The kids pool is a section of the 3rd floor pool area. It’s about 60cm deep, so even our 3-year-old could play safely. Operating hours are 9am to 7pm. There’s no slide, just a small fountain feature, but that actually made it safer. The adult pool is just one indoor heated pool; outdoor is only open during summer season.

For ocean views, 10th floor or higher is solid. The 12th floor room we saw had large windows with Gyeongpo Beach spreading right before us. The ocean angle is more frontal than Skybay, so personally I found Seabay’s view more expansive. Room layout is similar, but Seabay was remodeled more recently.

3. St. John’s Hotel — All Rooms Ocean View, Kids Pool Summer Only

Photo while waiting for check-in, you can see the ocean from the lobby

St. John’s is located slightly inland from Gyeongpo Beach. Parking is on the 1st floor piloti area and basement, but weekends might have limited spaces. The lobby has floor-to-ceiling windows, so you see the ocean immediately upon entering — the atmosphere was the best of the four.

All rooms have ocean views. The building faces the ocean in a straight line, so any floor you book gives you a frontal ocean view. We toured a 9th floor Standard Double, and the windows extended to the ceiling creating great openness. Off-season pricing was around $125 per night.

The downside is the kids pool only operates during summer season (June-August). In April, the pool area was completely closed. When I asked the front desk, they said in summer they create a kids zone in part of the outdoor pool, but I only saw photos. If you’re going without needing a pool it’s fine, but if the kids pool is your priority, Skybay or Seabay are better choices.

Breakfast is served at the 1st floor restaurant from 7-10am, $20 per person. It’s the most expensive of the four, but apparently the menu composition is more upscale. We didn’t try it ourselves, but Naver reviews mention lots of salmon and salad varieties.

4. Lakai Sandpine Resort — Spacious Luxury Rooms, No Kids Pool

Lakai Sandpine is a 5-minute walk from Gyeongpo Beach, nestled in a pine forest. Parking is ample, and the building is divided into tower and villa sections. We toured an 8th floor Family Suite in the tower — the room size was the largest of the four. Living room and bedroom are separated, plus there’s a terrace, making it convenient for kids to play.

There’s no kids pool. Only an adult pool indoors, with no dedicated kids area. There is a 1st floor kids lounge, but it’s more like a small playroom. If a pool is your priority, this might be disappointing. We considered Lakai because we needed spacious rooms more than a pool, but ultimately chose Skybay for the kids pool.

Breakfast is served buffet-style at the 1st floor all-day dining. 7-10am, $17 per person. Many reviews say the quality is hotel-grade. The salad bar, bread, and egg station selection is solid, and there are kids menu items. But we didn’t try it ourselves so can’t confirm.

Ocean views are only available from high floors of the tower building. 8th floor or higher recommended; below that, pine trees block the ocean view. Villa buildings have garden views with almost no ocean visibility. Off-season pricing for a Family Suite was around $190 per night — the most expensive of the four. However, the room size and amenities like garden walking paths were definitely superior.

Gangneung Gyeongpo Hotel Comparison — Family Travel Checklist

Hotel Kids Pool Breakfast Ocean View Floor Best For
Skybay Year-round 9am-8pm
(Wed 2-8pm)
$14/person 15th floor+
(18-20 best)
Families wanting longest pool hours
Seabay Year-round 9am-7pm Included in rate 10th floor+
(12+ frontal view)
Budget-conscious families, shallow pool safety
St. John’s Summer only
(Jun-Aug)
$20/person All rooms
(any floor)
Guaranteed ocean view without pool priority
Lakai Sandpine None
(adult only)
$17/person Tower 8th floor+
(villas: garden only)
Families prioritizing spacious suites & nature walks

If your priority is the kids pool and your child loves water play, Skybay or Seabay are solid choices. Skybay has longer operating hours and slides, while Seabay is shallower for safety and includes breakfast. If you’re traveling in spring or fall when kids pools matter, definitely choose one of these two.

If you want guaranteed frontal ocean views regardless of floor, St. John’s is unbeatable. Even low floors have clear ocean views, and the lobby atmosphere is lovely. But if you’re traveling with young kids outside summer, the lack of a kids pool is a significant drawback.

Lakai Sandpine is best for families who prioritize room space and amenities over pools. The Family Suite has separate living areas, and the pine forest garden provides a nice walking environment. However, with no kids pool and premium pricing, it’s not ideal for typical family trips with young children.

Our Choice: Skybay — Why We Chose It

We ultimately stayed at Skybay. The deciding factors were the year-round heated kids pool and extended operating hours until 8pm. Our 3-year-old could play in the pool after breakfast, rest in the afternoon, then swim again before dinner — that routine worked perfectly.

The breakfast was reasonably priced at $14 per person with plenty of kid-friendly options, so our child ate well. The ocean view from the 17th floor wasn’t the most spectacular, but seeing both Gyeongpo Lake and the ocean together had its own charm. The front desk service was friendly, and parking was convenient.

If we visit again in summer, I’d like to try Seabay. Since it includes breakfast and has frontal ocean views from the 12th floor up, it seems like better value. But for spring/fall trips focused on the kids pool, Skybay remains my top pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Which hotel has the best ocean view?
St. John’s guarantees ocean views from all rooms. Among the others, Seabay 12th floor+ and Skybay 18th floor+ offer excellent frontal views. Lakai requires tower building 8th floor or higher.

Q. Can we use the kids pool in April?
Skybay and Seabay operate year-round heated kids pools. St. John’s only opens in summer (June-August). Lakai has no kids pool.

Q. Is breakfast worth it?
If traveling with kids, yes. Hotel breakfasts offer kid-friendly menus like porridge, steamed eggs, and sausages that are hard to find at nearby restaurants. Seabay includes it in the room rate, making it the best value.

Q. Which hotel is closest to the beach?
Skybay and Seabay are right across from Gyeongpo Beach (1-2 minute walk). St. John’s is about 3 minutes, Lakai about 5 minutes on foot.

Q. What’s the price difference between peak and off-season?
Off-season (April, November) runs around $115-140 for standard rooms. Summer weekends (July-August) can easily double or triple that, often exceeding $300. Spring/fall weekdays offer the best value.

I hope this comparison helps you choose the right Gangneung Gyeongpo hotel for your family. Each has distinct advantages, so select based on your priorities — kids pool, ocean views, breakfast, or room space. Safe travels, and may you create wonderful memories with your children!
